FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) - Due to the expected onset of winter in central and southern Germany, Lufthansa is only offering a fuselage flight schedule on Wednesday. At its Frankfurt and Munich hubs, the company will only be able to operate the most essential flights in accordance with airport regulations, a company spokesman said on Tuesday. Both short-haul and long-haul flights would be canceled. The German Weather Service has announced heavy snowfall and freezing rain for Wednesday.

Lufthansa asked customers to check the status of their flight before traveling to the airport. "If your flight is canceled and you have no other confirmation for the same day, please do not come to the airport. There are no rebooking options there," it said on the Lufthansa website. Customers should use the online services and hotlines.

The spokesperson said that the flight offer would not cover the demand by far. Within Germany, customers could try to change to the train. The situation for Thursday will be reassessed on Wednesday. The airports have also announced weather-related restrictions on aircraft handling for this day./ceb/DP/jha
