(Alliance News) - Terna Spa announced Monday that national electricity demand reached 23.9 billion kWh in April, a 1.9% increase compared to the same month in 2025, driven primarily by growth in industrial consumption.

During the first four months of 2026, electricity demand rose by 2.8% year-on-year. Adjusted for temperature and calendar effects, the April increase stood at 1.5%.

The IMCEI index, compiled by Terna to track the consumption of approximately 1,000 energy-intensive companies, recorded an 8.8% increase in April, marking its eighth consecutive month of growth. For the first four months of 2026, the index rose by 5.2%.

According to Terna, on certain days characterized by high renewable output and low demand, industrial consumption surged by more than 60% compared to equivalent days in 2025, contributing to the flexibility and security of the power system.

In April, renewable sources covered 49.5% of national electricity demand, broadly in line with the 50.3% recorded a year earlier. Solar photovoltaic production, exceeding 5 billion kWh, jumped by 23.7%, largely due to the expansion of installed capacity.

Terna further reported that installed renewable capacity increased by 761 MW in April, bringing total installed capacity to 85,928 MW, of which 45,674 MW is solar and 13,865 MW is wind.

Terna shares rose 1.3% to EUR9.79.
