SVGIM applies private equity techniques to investing in publicly traded equities. They are a research driven manager with a stock selection investment process based on the team's proprietary fundamental valuation model. The team follows a three-stage investment process consisting of deal sourcing, deal evaluation and deal execution. They perform deal sourcing to identify publicly listed companies that are undervalued, seeking inputs from team members, the Strategic Advisory Board members, industry experts, directors, managers, and employees of publicly listed companies, a database of private equity and other corporate transactions and quantitative valuation and technical screening tools. SVGIM then evaluates the deal, presenting a Preliminary Investment Recommendation to the team. If approved, they identify the key areas for initial due-diligence and formally document how the investment could be profitable. Valuation of the company is based on bottom-up analysis with an emphasis on sustainable free cash-flow generation. Planning deal execution is a key element of the firm's investment process. Exit from an investment is likely to be triggered if an investment reaches its targeted exit price or a change in circumstances leads to a reduction in the investment's intrinsic value. If an investment thesis is challenged, the fund managers review the investment, and if the original estimate of discount to intrinsic value is no longer appropriate, the investment is sold.
