Greater Washington Urban League, Inc. is a nonprofit civil rights organization established in 1938 that empowers Black communities and people of color in the greater Washington, DC area through economic, social, and political advancement. The organization serves over 10,000 families annually across DC and surrounding counties, offering programs such as housing assistance, workforce development, financial aid, mental health services, and youth leadership initiatives. The organization supports small business revitalization and community economic vitality in historic DC neighborhoods through initiatives such as the Parks Main Street program, and hosts annual events like the Health & Wellness Back 2 School Festival. The non-profit company is based in Washington, DC. It invests in education scholarships, emergency rental and utility assistance, and community wellness, distributing over $156 million annually through its programs. As the largest affiliate of the National Urban League, the organization addresses systemic barriers including segregation, health disparities, and economic inequities, and promotes racial justice, equity, and self-reliance. Its family wellness center provides culturally centered mental health care, with specialized support for Black fathers and perinatal mental health, and offers training for Black health professionals and youth initiatives like the Future Leaders in Mobility program.
