The firm uses fundamental research with an emphasis on returns on capital to identify growing companies that are trading at a discount to their intrinsic values. Their investment selection process places emphasis on the free cash flow generated by a company's ongoing operations. Laidlaw Group looks for public profitable companies that are successfully converting sales into income. They also look for companies with high levels of assets compared to their liabilities, the potential for growth in earnings and revenues, competitive advantages within the marketplace and low prices relative to the cash flow they generate and the assets they own. Laidlaw Group overweights and underweights certain sectors within their portfolios based on their views of the macroeconomic trends. No S&P sector is weighted over 30% of equities.
