ArcelorMittal promoted Sapan Gupta, vice president and general counsel of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel to the position of global general counsel, which comes into effect from June 1, the company said in an internal note. General Counsel will deal with all the legal and compliance matters of ArcelorMittal, which is present across the globe. The exercise was part of the new management appointments. He reports to Genuino Christino, executive vice president and CFO of ArcelorMittal. Sapan Gupta joined the group just over a year ago to head the legal function in India, where ArcelorMittal's joint venture with Japan's Nippon Steel made the largest ever foreign direct investment in steel owning indebted Essar Steel through as a process of insolvency resolution. Prior to his role at ArcelorMittal Gupta headed the banking and financial services practice at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, one of India's leading law firms. He has also held legal positions at Bajaj Finance, Standard Chartered Bank, HSBC, ICICI Bank and the Tata Group.Gupta also worked overseas at Sidley Austin in New York shortly after completing his Master of Laws (LLM) degree at Harvard Law School. He obtained his primary law degree from Delhi University. More than a month ago the group named Aditya Mittal, son of founder Laxmi Mittal as chief executive officer of the group.
