Lionel Wendt Art Centre Lionel Wendt Art Centre The Lionel Wendt Art Centre, located in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is a prominent multi-purpose cultural institution established in the 1950s in memory of Lionel George Henricus Wendt, a pioneering figure in modern and contemporary art. The centre, situated on the site of Wendt’s former residence, Alborado, is owned and managed by the non-profit Lionel Wendt Memorial Fund. It houses key facilities including the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, the Harold Peiris Gallery, the Lionel Wendt Theatre, and the Black Box Theatre, offering a versatile venue for exhibitions, concerts, theatre, dance, recitals, and arts education. The centre serves as a vibrant cultural hub where eastern and western artistic traditions blend, supporting innovative and indigenous artistic expression and acting as a meeting place for diverse communities. A major focus of the centre is the preservation and celebration of Wendt’s artistic legacy, holding the largest collection of his photographs and personal art collections, as well as sculptures by notable Sri Lankan artists.
