Sheffield Investment Management (SIMI) typically employs a balanced approach to portfolio development. They invest portfolios in a mix of stocks, bonds and various alternative investments including REITs and commodity-type funds. Accounts are reviewed quarterly which may result in changes to the mix depending on quantitative factors such as changing asset class valuations and market volatility, as well as qualitative factors including political risks, global trends and the client's investment objectives and risk tolerance. SIMI emphasizes diversification in portfolio design. In stock portfolios, investments are typically diversified across major domestic and global economic sectors. SIMI may also include managed funds, index funds or ETFs. The firm invests in US and foreign equities that offer the potential for attractive total returns. These securities consist primarily of individual stocks, mutual funds, REITs and commodity-type investments. SIMI heavily utilizes ETFs which typically have lower turnover and expense ratios than actively managed funds. Portfolios generally do not reflect the composition of any particular domestic or foreign stock index. SIMI primarily invests in the following fixed-income assets: investment-quality domestic corporate bonds, municipal bonds, convertible bonds, US Department of Treasury and government agency bonds, bonds of foreign governments and foreign corporate issues and bond mutual funds that have a desired focus. Bonds must be rated BBB or higher by Standard & Poor's or Moody's. Bond maturities are typically laddered within client accounts to provide for a regular flow of capital. SIMI utilizes a variety of institutional brokerage sources for bond purchases and sales, allowing clients to benefit from a wider variety of choices and the potential for better pricing on trades.
