KPIM's analyst/portfolio managers use a rational, business-like approach to selecting and evaluating companies for inclusion in a portfolio. Their research is on companies expected to earn a high return on capital, that can generate good long-term growth, are run by shareholder-minded managements and sell at attractive prices. For most clients, they view fixed-income investments as a source of income and relative price stability compared to stocks. Depending on the risk tolerances, liquidity needs and tax situation of the client, they select from such issues as U.S. government bonds, investment-grade corporates and municipal obligations. They often structure bond investments so that a roughly equivalent dollar amount matures each year. KPIM seeks to control credit risk through proprietary credit analysis and interest rate risk through constraints on the duration of bonds selected for investment. As with their equity management service, they construct fixed-income and balanced portfolios with the client's goals and risk preferences in mind.

AFIA aims to buy stocks of good businesses when they sell below what the firm think they are worth and sells them when they reach fair values. When fully invested, most of their equity-oriented client portfolios will have 15 to 25 stock positions.
