FAO logs a broad rise in global food prices in August 2026

The FAO Food Price Index averaged 133.3 points in August 2026, up 2.5 points (1.9%) from its revised July value. All group price indices were higher than the previous month, although the size of the increases varied considerably from one group to another. The food price index rose 3.3 points (2.5%) from its level a year earlier, but remained 26.9 points (16.8%) below its record high reached in March 2022.

Alstom lands a giant €3bn contract in Canada

Alstom has signed an agreement with VIA Rail Canada covering the design, engineering, manufacturing and support of a new fleet for the country's Long-Distance, Regional and Remote (LDRR) services. The deal includes the delivery of 313 Adessia passenger cars, worth about $4bn Canadian, as well as a 15-year technical support and spare-parts supply contract valued at nearly $700m Canadian. The total value of the contract therefore comes to $4.7bn Canadian (about €3bn).
