(Alliance News) - Terna Spa on Wednesday let it be known that the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security authorized by decree on May 10 Elmed, the electricity interconnection between Italy and Tunisia to be built by Terna and STEG, the Tunisian grid operator.

The power line, for which a total investment of about EUR850 million is planned, will have a total length of about 220 km, most of which will be in submarine cable. The 600 MW direct current link will reach a maximum depth of about 800 meters along the Sicilian Channel.

"The authorization of the new interconnection between Italy and Tunisia, in addition to being an important milestone within the challenging energy transition goals set in the PNIEC, will allow the country, by virtue of its strategic geographical position, to strengthen its role as an electricity 'hub' in Europe and in the Mediterranean area, becoming a key player at the international level," said Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.

As for the Italian side of the Mase-authorized work, the overland cable will run for 18 km from the Castelvetrano landfall in the province of Trapani to the conversion station that will be built in Partanna, also in the province of Trapani, near the existing power station.

In Tunisia, the power station will be built in Mlaabi, on the Cape Bon peninsula.

Terna trades in the green by 1.7 percent at EUR7.88 per share.
