Nakusp, B.C.- As part of a strategic partnership with the Province, TELUS has invested $675,000 to bring new wireless coverage to more than 24 kilometers of Highway 6 between Fauquier and Burton.

The site located in the community of Burton is now live, providing wireless coverage to a stretch of Highway 6 and Burton, Carrolls Landing, and Makison.

"At TELUS, we know how important wireless services are, and continue to make significant investments in our networks for customers here in B.C. and right across Canada," said Steve Jenkins, TELUS general manager for the Southern Interior. "We've heard from residents that these communities and this stretch of Highway were in need of crucial wireless services. Our significant investment enhances service to residents and gives motorists the ability to make hands-free wireless calls. Most importantly, motorists now have more access to 911 emergency services, making highway travel safer in this area."

The project is part of the 10-year Connecting British Columbia agreement signed with the Province of B.C. in 2011. Under the terms of the agreement TELUS will invest to connect more than 1,700 kilometres of unconnected highways with wireless service.

"New cellular coverage means a safer and better travel experience for all drivers along this stretch of Highway 6 and improved service for local residents and businesses," said Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens' Services Andrew Wilkinson. "Government is committed to expanding connectivity around the province, so everyone in B.C. has access to the benefits of modern digital communication."

This significant investment is part of $3 billion in infrastructure and facilities upgrades TELUS is making across British Columbia through 2014 and builds upon the $29 billion TELUS has already invested in operations and technology throughout the province since 2000.
