Deutsche Telekom demonstrated at MWC a futuristic smartphone concept that relies on artificial intelligence rather than applications (apps). The concept was developed together with Qualcomm.

"I assure you that in 5 to 10 years none of us will be using apps anymore," CEO Tim Hoettges said in a keynote.

Examples of what the phone could do include responding to queries and generating customized recommendations for travel destinations, buying a product or sending photos and videos to contacts.

Deutsche Telekom believes that so-called multi- and cross-modal Large Language Models (LLMs) will soon become an integral part of many devices.

Under Concept T, the telecom company also presented the concept of hologram telephony. Not on the shelf tomorrow, but in our heads and labs today. Think of helpful shopping assistant showing desired products as holograms in 3D for review and the right shoes for a new pair of pants. Or selecting your favorite movies, books or songs.

All this, too, will be made possible by smart AI, says Claudia Nemat, member of the Executive Board for Technology and Innovation at Deutsche Telekom.

At Mobile World Congress, visitors can ask virtual assistant Emma to present products such as the T-phone and its functions. Emma then shows them a three-dimensional image of the device.

The hardware in this case is simple glass ball. The technical basis is the router. Deutsche Telekom says it reinvents the router and the device becomes an emotional experience.

These technology concepts will not be implemented and produced in the same way, according to the telecom company. However, it is conceivable that individual functions will be implemented in different products.

The research was conducted in collaboration with London-based design firm Layer.
