(Alliance News) - BT Group PLC will take a stake in drone startup Altitude Angel Ltd, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.

Following BT's GBP5 million investment via its digital unit Etc., the telecommunication company's director of drones Dave Pankhurst will join the board of Altitude.

Under the agreement, it is planned that drones will carry cargo, retail consignments and medical supplies over a proposed 165 miles long drone corridor across southern and central England, under a project named Skyway.

BT will provide "network infrastructure and its scalability experience to deploy and maintain Altitude Angel's ARROW tower network," Altitude Angel said on its website.

Altitude Angel said that the deal "will accelerate Altitude Angel's roll-out of its transformative ARROW technology, which detects and identifies drones, while also enabling drones to share the airspace with crewed aviation safely and securely."

In December 2020, Altitude Angel had said it and BT formed a consortium on a drone delivery project.

BT shares were 0.8% higher at 115.67 pence each in London on Wednesday morning.
