  • Extensive modernization and expansion of a production facility for food additives
  • Bilfinger convinces with comprehensive project management together with multidisciplinary engineering services from a single source
  • Targeted use of digital technologies allows for efficient implementation while the facility remains in operation

Frankfurt, Germany - Bilfinger has been awarded an extensive design and engineering contract worth several million euros by Nutrinova, a joint venture between Mitsui and Celanese. The services will be delivered at a production facility for food additives in the Frankfurt Hoechst industrial park. The major project includes both expansion and modernization of the existing plant (brownfield) and construction of a new additional building section (greenfield). The objective is to expand local production capacities while at the same time optimizing process management.

Bilfinger's Engineering business unit will assume responsibility for comprehensive, multidisciplinary project planning, technical consulting and engineering. The contract covers all trades, including process engineering, mechanical and apparatus engineering, electrical and instrumentation, piping construction, construction and technical building equipment planning as well as procurement support. With its centrally coordinated management, Bilfinger ensures smooth and efficient processing with a single interface for the customer. Bilfinger is one of only a handful of providers on the market that is in a position to offer the entire engineering planning in-house.

"As a solutions provider, we understand how important it is to seamlessly integrate various specialist functions so that our customers get exactly the solutions they need", says Thomas Froitzheim, President Region E&M DACH at Bilfinger. "For this complex large-scale project, we are pooling our comprehensive engineering expertise across locations in order to provide Nutrinova with competent and end-to-end handling of all technical disciplines from a single source."

Particular challenges of the project include the sequence of execution during two turnarounds and the subsequent resumption of operations. Bilfinger relies on digital technologies such as 3D scans of the plant to enable efficient implementation in the shortest possible amount of time and with minimal downtime. The realistic 3D visualization of the plants not only gives the customer the opportunity to be directly involved in the planning phase using augmented reality (AR) glasses provided by Bilfinger, it also makes it easier for the industrial services provider to coordinate the individual trades and to identify optimization opportunities at an early stage.

The Bilfinger project team currently consists of 20 employees and will eventually include up to 30 engineers, technicians and technical draftsmen. The partnership-based cooperation between Bilfinger and Nutrinova plays an important role here, not least to ensure that the strict regulations governing the production of food additives are met on site and to guarantee the quality and safety of the products.

Nutrinova is a leading manufacturer of sweeteners and preservatives for the food industry. Bilfinger has been a reliable partner for Celanese for many years and supports the company with its Mechanical business unit in the field of rotating equipment with the Bilfinger pump workshop located at the Frankfurt Hoechst site.
