(Alliance News) - Webuild Spa reported Friday that the first of more than 90 caissons that will make up the first four kilometers of the total six kilometers of the work, "work on which is going on unabated," was laid at a depth of 25 meters in the maritime yard of the PerGenova Breakwater consortium led by the company, a note said.

Attending the laying operations were Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, along with Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority Paolo Piacenza, Acting President of the Liguria Region Alessandro Piana, Mayor of Genoa and Extraordinary Commissioner for the dam Marco Bucci, and Pietro Salini, CEO of Webuild.

In parallel with laying the first caisson and preparing for the placement of the next mega blocks, the statement said, the Genoa Breakwater consortium is engaged in activities on several fronts.

"The new breakwater in Genoa, the deepest in Europe, is a complex engineering work, destined to reshape the role of the city of Genoa in global trade routes. In fact, the work will allow the port to be enlarged, providing entry for ships up to 400 meters long," Webuild continues.

The project -- carried out by the consortium led by Webuild at 40 percent, with Fincantieri Infrastructure at 25 percent, Fincosit at 25 percent, and Sidra at 10 percent -- now involves 230 direct and third-party workers, and will employ a total of about 1,000 people, and more than 130 supply chain companies involved since work began.

Webuild trades in the green by 0.8 percent at EUR2.08 per share.
