(Alliance News) - Webuild Spa announced Monday that U.S. subsidiary Lane has been awarded a USD218 million contract to increase capacity and improve mobility and safety at the intersection of Interstate 4 (I-4) and Sand Lake Road (State Road 482) in Orange County, Florida.

The intersection is part of the well-known Orlando tourism corridor that connects some of Central Florida's most important attractions, such as Universal Studios, Sea World, and Walt Disney World.

"The I-4 and Sand Lake Road Interchange Improvements project," as the contract is identified, will speed up and make safer traffic flows in the area, with benefits for travel time and in terms of lower CO2 emissions, and with positive impacts on the local economy as well," Webuild explained.

Commissioned by the Florida Department of Transportation, the project involves the widening and upgrading of more than 6 kilometers of road, including the replacement of two bridges, the construction of a new express lane bridge and three new access ramps, and the implementation of tolling systems and all traffic signals. When completed, the intersection with I-4 will be ready to accommodate a "Diverging Diamond Interchange" type configuration, the diverging diamond intersection model designed to reduce the risk of on-street accidents through a system of ramps that also reduce the time to cross the intersection.

"Lane has a major presence in Florida. It is working on widening a section of I-275 to streamline the flow of people and goods in the Tampa Bay area. In the Orlando area, in Osceola County, it is completing the Poinciana Parkway . Also in Orlando, it is working on the city's ring road, for the section related to the intersection of I-4, SR 417 and the new Wekiva Parkway being completed," recalled the former Salini Impregilo.
