True literacy in guns and how they fit in the American psyche is critical to understanding this country. And so we are thrilled to announce that Thomas Gibbons-Neff is joining National to cover gun culture and policy.

T.M., as he's known, joins us after a remarkable run on the International desk. Most recently, he covered Ukraine and was part of the team that produced a 2022 year-end investigative epic, Putin's War, and covered what life was like on the front line for civilians and soldiers alike.

Before that, he was Kabul bureau chief. Along with his incredible Afghan colleagues, T.M. focused on how much Afghanistan was changing as the United States withdrew and the Taliban took control of province after province. T.M. also followed the Taliban, interviewing a commander he fought years before on the battlefield. When Kabul was falling, T.M. was an extraordinary leader, helping to get over 120 Times colleagues and their families safely out of the country. And he beautifully chronicled the end of America's longest war. T.M., along with several other correspondents in Afghanistan, won an Overseas Press Club award in 2021 for their brave and deeply reported work.

Before going overseas, he covered the military in the Washington bureau. He joined The Times in 2017 from The Washington Post. Before becoming a journalist, he completed two tours in the United States Marine Corps as an enlisted infantryman in Afghanistan.

T.M. is not new to National. Back in 2019, he hosted a group of National editors and correspondents for an information session on weapons.

Please join us in welcoming him to the team.
