Electricity demand in June was 25.7 billion kWh, up 1.5 percent year-on-year, and 43.8 percent of demand was met by renewables (compared to 34.9 percent in the first six months of 2023). This is an all-time record on a six-month basis.

Terna writes this in a note summarizing production and consumption data updated for the first half of the year.

In the first six months of 2024, production from renewable sources grew 27.3 percent year-on-year, surpassing for the first time production from fossil fuels, down 19 percent.

In addition, from January to June 2024, renewable hydropower production reached a record high thanks to significant hydraulicity availability in the North, compared with resource scarcity in the South.

During the period, renewable capacity in operation increased by 3,691 MW (including 3,341 MW of PV). This is 1,074 MW (+41%) higher than in the same period last year.
