Vienna - The listed European technology group for construction services STRABAG SE announced figures for the first quarter of 2022. ' The high order backlog forms a solid basis for the full-year output outlook. Under the current framework conditions, we are confident of being able to achieve our goal of generating a sustainable 4% EBIT margin from 2022, despite the price dynamics. Nonetheless, the supply chain and price risks must of course be carefully monitored and continuously evaluated, ' says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

perfomance

In the first quarter of 2022, the STRABAG SE Group increased output by 12% to EUR3.1 billion, which is mainly due to the more favorable construction weather compared to the same quarter of the previous year. By far the largest contribution to output was achieved in the home market of Germany, followed by the Czech Republic, Austria and the United Kingdom, where the two largest projects in the order backlog are currently being processed. With the exception of Denmark and the Benelux countries, where a decline in output was recorded, there were no significant changes compared to the same period of the previous year.

backlog

The order backlog reached a new record value of EUR23.7 billion (+18% compared to March 31, 2021). Here, too, Germany made the strongest contribution to the growth in the order backlog in absolute terms with a plus of 26%, followed by Austria (+21%) and Poland (+35%). The Czech Republic (+23%), the Americas (+36%) and Hungary (+33%) also recorded a significant increase. In contrast, the order backlog declined in the United Kingdom, as well as in the Benelux countries and Denmark. Projects acquired in the first quarter of 2022 include the expansion of the S19 expressway in Poland, the Grunblick residential project in Austria in Viertel Zwei in Vienna and the construction of the headquarters of Volksbank Raiffeisenbank Bayern Mitte in Ingolstadt, Germany.

Number of employees

There was a shift in the number of employees from the Americas region - here the number of employees was reduced due to the processing of a large tunnel construction project - towards the core markets of Europe. Due to the increased performance and the increased order backlog, the number of employees could be increased, especially in the home market of Germany and the United Kingdom. Overall, the number of employees remained almost unchanged at the previous year's level at 71,167.

outlook

In view of Russia's war against Ukraine, which began in the first quarter, any forecast is still subject to uncertainties and risks. Based on the new record order backlog and output in the first quarter of 2022, which roughly corresponds to the level of the first quarter of 2019, the Management Board is sticking to the targeted construction output of EUR16.6 billion for 2022 for the time being. Furthermore, he assumes that he will generate a sustainable EBIT margin of at least 4%. Net investments (cash flow from investing activities) should not exceed EUR550 million.
