Rio Tinto has announced the construction of two new 5.25 MW solar farms on the Gove Peninsula in northern Australia, as the mining group seeks to secure a more sustainable electricity supply.

Following an agreement with the traditional owners, these solar farms will help support a low-carbon future for the Gove community after mining operations cease towards the end of the decade.

Aggreko will build, own and operate Rio Tinto's solar farms for up to 10 years, with construction starting in July 2024 and completion scheduled for early 2025. The two sites will have a combined capacity of 10.5 MW.

' The Gove solar project is part of our shared vision with the Traditional Owners to leave a positive legacy for the communities of the Gove Peninsula following the cessation of bauxite mining, ' commented Shannon Price, Rio Tinto Gove's interim managing director of operations.
