Chipotle fans in California are the test bed for a carside pickup pilot test happening at 29 restaurants.

If successful Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. plans to roll out the option on a nationwide basis later this year, according to a press release.

The pickup option takes place through the Chipotle app with guests selecting the option during checkout and then parking as close to the location upon arrival. Once at the store the user taps an 'I'm here' button and a Chipotle employee brings the order to the car.

Guests can share vehicle type, make and color in the app, to help the employee find their car.

"As our digital business evolves, we are continuing to explore ways to remove friction and increase access to our real food," Curt Garner, chief technology officer, said in the release. "Chipotle Carside unlocks a new, highly convenient pick up experience for guests from our restaurants' parking lots."

The strategy comes as the brand has seen digital sales triple year over year with digital sales accounting for nearly 50% of sales in Q3 2020.

Earlier this month, Chipotle added a concierge chat bot, Pepper, for frequently asked questions.
