BLUE BELL, Pa., Jan. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that it has received a contract to provide cloud-based IT services to the California State University (CSU), the largest public university in the United States and a long-time Unisys client.

The contract has an initial four-year term, extending the current contract for IT services through April 2016. It also includes a one-year renewal option.

Unisys currently hosts applications and databases supporting CSU's Oracle/PeopleSoft Higher Education suite in the Unisys managed services center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Under the terms of the new contract, Unisys will implement those services through the Unisys Hosted Secure Private Cloud Solution, which gives clients such as CSU faster, automated access to IT resources to address changing business requirements without needing to purchase additional infrastructure.

This solution is designed to make it easier for CSU's students, faculty and staff at 23 campuses and the Chancellor's Office to access the system simultaneously and perform administrative tasks crucial to the university system's operations. Those include scheduling and registering for classes, managing human resources and handling administrative tasks such as applying for parking permits - an important task given the university's large proportion of student commuters.

The Unisys Hosted Secure Private Cloud Solution gives clients tight control over which business assets are shared in the cloud. This benefit is important for CSU, where many of the PeopleSoft Higher Education suite applications share a common database. For example, information relevant to one campus can be walled off from others that have no need to access it.

As a new service for CSU, Unisys will implement a disaster recovery system at its managed services center in Eagan, Minnesota to provide business continuity management and maintain the integrity and accessibility of information related to academic services.

"We are excited for the opportunity to extend our relationship with the California State University," said Bill Bancroft, vice president and general manager, North America, Unisys Global Managed Services. "We look forward to helping CSU use the power of cloud computing to streamline its operations, control costs and expand academic services to students at all its campuses."
