Lombardy (+2.6%) and Sicily (+2.2%) drivers of the increase
Rome, January 12, 2012 - For the second consecutive year after the 2009 drop - when consumption decreased by 5.7% - in 2011, electricity demand registered a positive sign. Early provisional data on the 2011 electricity demand show a 0.6% increase compared to 2010, that in turn had registered a + 3.2% compared to 2009.
The total energy demand required in Italy in 2011 was equal
to 332.3 billion kWh.
Sicily (+2.2%) and Lombardy were the drivers of the increase,
with the latter registering the most significant growth with
+2.6%. A more limited increase in electricity demand was
registered in Triveneto (+0.5%), Central Italy (+0.4%) and
the South, excluding the islands (+0.3%). In Sardinia (-1.4%)
and in the North Western area (-2.6%) a drop was
registered.
According to early estimates, in 2011, the electricity demand
was met for 86.3% with the National production (64.7%
thermoelectric production, 14.3% hydroelectric, 2.9% wind
power, 2.8% photovoltaic solar energy and 1.6% geothermal)
and for the remaining part (13.7%) with the balance of
electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More in
details, the net national production (289.2 billion kWh)
dropped by 0.5% compared to 2010; geothermal production
increased (+5.2%), as did wind power (+5.7%) and photovoltaic
solar production (+394%), while hydroelectric (-11.4%) and
thermal production decreased (-1.6%).
Regarding December 2011, the electricity required in Italy,
equal to 27.3 billion kWh, dropped by
5.0% compared to the volumes of December 2010. The variation
in electricity demand for
December 2011 is -3.3% without the effect of two working days
less (20 vs 22) and of an average monthly temperature higher
by nearly one degree C compared to December 2010. The
short-term profile for December 2011 showed a seasonally
adjusted variation in electricity demand compared to the
previous month equal to -0.5%. The trend profile confirmed a
negative outlook.
In December 2011, the electricity demand was met for 84.7%
with the national production and for the remaining part
(15.3%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with
foreign countries. More in
details, the net national production (23.4 billion kWh) was
reduced by 11.3% compared to the
same month in 2010; wind power production increased (+29.8%)
as well as photovoltaic solar energy production (+458.7%),
while hydroelectric (-31.9) and thermal (-11.8%) production
decreased; geothermal production remained unchanged (0.0%).
At the territorial level, the variation for December 2011 was
negative and slightly differentiated everywhere: -5.6% in the
North, -4.2% in Central Italy and -4.5% in the South.
Throughout the 12 months of 2011, electricity demand
increased by +0.6% compared to 2010; based on the same number
of days, the variation is equal to +0.7%.
