SPIE : launches its carbon calculator to support its customers in their decarbonisation challenges

Cergy, 21 May 2024 -SPIE France, the French subsidiary of the SPIE group, the European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, launches its carbon calculator, a tool that allows users to measure the carbon impact of the equipment and services SPIE offers to its customers. As a global player in the energy, digital and industrial transitions in France, SPIE France is taking a new step towards fulfilling its mission to contribute to the emergence of a low-carbon society.

Decarbonisation, a strategic focus for organisations

Decarbonisation sits at the heart of SPIE France's CSR approach and is a strategic focus for its customers. As a major component of any decarbonisation strategy, reducing carbon emissions meets several regulatory obligations, including the French Energy-Climate Law, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the RE 2020, which is the new French energy and environmental regulation for all new construction, and the European Green Deal.

A pioneering tool to help SPIE France's customers in their low-carbon transition

The carbon calculator developed by SPIE France makes it possible to establish a concrete estimate of the emissions of the equipment and services that the company offers to its customers and which fall within scope 3 of their carbon footprint^[1]. It uses a calculation based on a monetary average carbon weight.

The tool also helps significantly with the initiation of dialogue between SPIE and its customers, with raising awareness about environmental data and with identifying the most significant carbon emission items. The calculator complements the Group's sustainable engineering approach which entails proposing low-carbon alternatives and increasing the proportion of SPIE's activities that significantly contribute to mitigating climate change, in accordance with the European taxonomy of sustainable activities.

SPIE France is already working on the second development phase to improve the accuracy of this calculator, as well as working with its suppliers and trusted third parties, using physical and non-monetary emission factors, to ensure the reliability of its databases.

"Our carbon calculator has been designed with ergonomics and simplicity for users in mind. We have made it as automated as possible, without the need for double data entry. It can be used as soon as projects are costed for each client," explains Jean-Jacques Bucher, Director of Business Development and Strategy at SPIE France.

"This tool is an integral part of our CSR strategy (known as 'La preuve par SPIE' [Evidence by SPIE]), which we use both internally and with our customers. By pursuing that strategy, our ambition is to provide an even greater and more concrete contribution to the emergence of a low-carbon society, the conservation of our environment and a fairer society," adds Ingrid Jouve, CSR Director of SPIE France.
