French billionaire Xavier Niel is digging into Belgian telecom company Proximus through his Irish holding company Carraun. There he has built up a stake of about six percent. Carraun owns Irish telecom provider Eir.

Proximus is 53.5 percent owned by the Belgian government. Eir was also originally a public company in Ireland, but was privatized in 1999.

In France, Niet founded telecom operator Free. He also invested in telecom companies in several other European countries. Last year, he bought a stake in Britain's Vodafone.
