Capital Partnership between Marubeni and Interstellar Technologies
On November 1, Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, Marubeni) and Interstellar Technologies Inc. (hereinafter, "IST") entered into a capital partnership via Marubeni's investment in IST.
IST is a venture company established in 2003 and are based out of Taiki-cho, Hokkaido. They are a manufacturer of a kind of Sounding Rocket called, "MOMO" and a type of Orbital Launch Vehicle for Small Satellites called, "ZERO" . In May 2019, an IST MOMO reached outer space successfully, and was the first rocket developed and manufactured by a private company in Japan to do so.
While the demand for using small satellites for Earth observation and communication is increasing, there is currently a shortage of rockets for transporting small satellites to space. Existing large rockets do not always meet the demand for transportation of small satellites to space in terms of launch frequency, price, and launch orbit flexibility. IST develops a rocket that make it possible to launch small satellites at high frequency and low price, and aims to create a launch service for small satellites that meets the needs of users.
Marubeni started a business collaboration with IST in 2016 and has been supporting the company's sales and marketing efforts in Japan and overseas ever since. With this new investment, Marubeni and IST will further strengthen their partnership and contribute to the development of the space industry not only in Japan but also throughout the rest of the world by providing high-frequency and low-priced launch services.
