- First in Greece to move ahead to IP network interconnection at 400Gbps
- Supporting broadband traffic that is constantly growing due to the development of FTTH and 5G technologies

COSMOTE and OTEGLOBE are increasing their backbone networks' capacity in order to continue supporting seamless broadband data traffic inside and outside Greece, in spite of the constant increase resulting mainly from the development of FTTH and 5G technologies. The networks' upgrade is being achieved by increasing the communication speed between IP routers[1] in OTE and OTEGLOBE networks from 100Gbps to 400Gbps. This is the first use of this technology in Greece and will optimize users' connectivity experience.

Each video streaming, download and upload, phone call, etc., requires data transfer via telecommunications networks, either within Greece or to and from the international nodes where the servers, hosting the content, are located (content delivery networks/CDNs). The continuous increase in the use of broadband services, in combination with the rapid development of next-generation FTTH and 5G networks, is resulting in an exponential growth of the volume of telecommunications traffic, which is expected to continue in the coming years. It is noted that this traffic has risen by 30% to 40% annually during the pandemic. In order for users to enjoy the optimum connectivity experience, COSMOTE and OTEGLOBE upgraded their existing network interconnection technology from 100Gbps to 400Gbps, quadrupling fiber-optic communication speed.

Thanks to the new technology for multi-interface communication at 400Gbps connection speed, even larger data volumes and traffic bursts can be seamlessly supported. OTEGLOBE will thus be able to carry telecommunications traffic to and from Greece via its international fiber optic network - which has a total length of 21,000 kilometres - with even greater security, reliability and speed. Correspondingly, COSMOTE will use it for backbone network connections in order to continue to ensure optimum support for the high speeds provided to customers via FTTH and 5G. This will enable COSMOTE customers to enjoy cutting-edge communication speeds, despite the increasing use of Cloud services, HD Video Streaming, Video Conferencing, Social Media, IoT, etc. At the same time, COSMOTE and OTEGLOBE will reduce their environmental footprint, as this new technology transmits data at high speeds with significantly reduced energy consumption.

"We are intensively investing in improving the coverage, capacity and speed of our networks. We are the first in Greece to move ahead with the implementation of the 400Gbps IP interconnection network in order to ensure that our fixed and mobile COSMOTE customers enjoy the highest connectivity and communication experience, now and in the future. This is the only way to make the most of the potential of technology, creating a better world for all," said the Chief Strategy, Transformation & Wholesale Officer of the OTE Group, Ioannis Konstantinidis.
