General Motors (GM) announced yesterday that it has registered with the Fédération Internationale Automobile (FIA) to become a Formula 1 engine manufacturer from 2028.

"We are delighted that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 will be powered by a GM powertrain," said GM President Mark Reuss.

' With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we are confident that we will develop a high-performance powertrain for the series and position Andretti Cadillac as a true factory team. We will race with the best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for racing fans around the world', he added.

The automaker's announcement will, among other things, bolster the bid by the American Andretti team, which aspires to join the premier class of motorsport as early as 2026, or even 2025, as the eleventh team.
