General Dynamics Corp. on Wednesday reported higher earnings for the fourth quarter, with revenue up in its marine systems, combat systems and technologies divisions.

The global aerospace and defense company reported a profit of $992 million, or $3.58 a share, an increase from its profit of $952 million, or $3.39 a share, in the same quarter a year ago.

Analysts recently polled by FactSet had expected $3.54 a share.

Total sales rose 5.4% to $10.85 billion. Analysts had expected total sales of $10.68 billion.

Revenue growth was led by its combat systems unit, up nearly 16%, followed by technologies, up 9.3% and marine systems, up 3.4%. Revenue in its aerospace unit fell 4.3%.

The company said it had an order backlog of $91.1 billion, the highest in its history, with a nearly 20% increase in its aerospace segment to $19.5 billion.
