easyJet, the UK's largest airline, today published a national poll that has revealed that bacon butties are the number one snack of choice for Brits polling four times more votes than second place cheese on toast. This is confirmed by easyJet's onboard sales figures showing that bacon baguettes are the biggest selling hot food with over 2.5 million sold since it was introduced in 2008. This could be, in part, because the aroma of a freshly cooked bacon butty was voted the favourite food smell of those surveyed - even beating traditional British favourite fish and chips.

The survey shows that as a nation we prefer to tuck in to a bacon butty over other traditional classics like cheese on toast, pork pies and scotch eggs. The survey also shows that we are more likely to reach for a bacon sandwich in times of economic uncertainty, preferring down-to-earth comfort food in a downturn rather than upmarket, extravagant treats.

Sharon Huetson, easyJet's Strategic Partnership Manager In-Flight, said: "This survey backs up something we have seen over the past three years - bacon butties are the clear favourite with easyJet passengers. Whether passengers are looking for a hearty snack at the beginning of their journey or the first taste of home on their way back."

The survey revealed that 67 percent of respondents would opt for the bacon butty as their ideal light bite. Once popular favourites were way down the list with the traditional pork pie generating only six per cent of the vote and the scotch egg a tiny two percent.

easyJet's bacon baguette uses tasty rashers of back bacon sourced from Southern Ireland.  The product has been specifically designed and taste-tested for cooking onboard the aircraft and consists of an eight inch crusty white baguette which is generously filled with bacon. Each bacon baguette is on sale for £4 and comes with sachets of tomato ketchup.
