The in vitro diagnostics group bioMérieux and Pfizer announce their collaboration with the Malawian Ministry of Health, to create the first multi-sectoral initiative to combat antibiotic resistance in this southern African country.

This initiative will strengthen public action in the proper use of antibiotics through infection prevention and control, diagnosis and surveillance. It will also guide healthcare professionals in the rational use of antibiotics.

'Antibiotic resistance is one of the most serious threats to global health', say the two groups, pointing out that it is responsible for 1.27 million deaths a year, mainly in low- and middle-income countries.
