On Friday, Alphabet subsidiary Google unveiled a series of new tools for leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance online security.

The program - dubbed the 'IA Cyber Defense Initiative' - includes the launch of a new AI-based open source tool to help cyber defenders better detect malware.

In a press release, Google points out that it has already used this service, known as 'Magika', to protect its Gmail e-mail service, Drive data storage and Safe Browsing secure browsing service.

The technology group explains that it now plans to make this tool available free of charge to other users, so that they can use and integrate it within their own systems.

Speaking from Munich, Kent Walker, Google's president of global business, said AI was giving the advantage back to defenders by removing complexity from operations.

'Our AI-based cyber defense initiative reverses the defender's dilemma, in which defenders must be right all the time and attackers must be right only once', he stressed.

The presentation is the latest in a series of announcements made by Google in recent weeks to highlight the benefits of AI in cybersecurity.

Over the period from 2019 to the end of 2024, the company plans to invest over five billion dollars in data centers in Europe, to support in particular its generative AI capabilities, such as the Vertex AI platform.
