(Alliance News) - Stocks in London are set to open higher on Friday, ahead of the the key US non-farm payrolls print later.

IG says futures indicate the FTSE 100 to open up 28.0 points, 0.4%, at 7,479.54 on Friday. The index of London large-caps closed added 39.09 points, or 0.5%, at 7,451.54 on Thursday.

The decline in UK retail footfall worsened last month, in a "subdued" end to the third-quarter, numbers on Friday showed, with focus now turning to the vital Christmas period.

According to the latest British Retail Consortium-Sensormatic IQ tracker, UK retail footfall fell 2.9% on-year in September, worsening from a 1.6% fall in August.

"During the warmer-than-expected weather, footfall slowed in September, with fewer shoppers across all shopping locations," BRC Chief Executive Helen Dickinson said.

Focus now turns to Friday's nonfarm payrolls data, the official employment report. The reading is expected to show jobs growth of 170,000 in September, easing from 187,000 in August. The data is released at 1330 BST.

Sterling was quoted at USD1.2170 early Friday, higher than USD1.2164 at the London equities close on Thursday.

The euro traded at USD1.0536 early Friday, higher than USD1.0526 late Thursday. Against the yen, the dollar was quoted at JPY148.83, higher versus JPY148.58.

In the US on Thursday, Wall Street ended slightly lower, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average little changed, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were both down 0.1%.

In Asia on Friday, the Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo was down 0.1%. In China, the Shanghai Composite was up 0.1%, while the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong was up 1.5%. The S&P/ASX 200 in Sydney up 0.4%.

Gold was quoted at USD1,823.33 an ounce early Friday, higher than USD1,815.53 on Thursday. Brent oil was trading at USD84.03 a barrel early Friday, lower than USD84.56 late Thursday.

Before the US jobs report in the afternoon, Friday's economic calendar has a Halifax UK house price index reading at 0700 BST and Irish gross domestic product data at 1100 BST.

The local corporate calendar has full-year results from JD Wetherspoon.
