ArcelorMittal Méditerranée and Veolia Industrie Global Solutions are creating a 50-50 joint venture to modernise the energy installations at ArcelorMittal's Fos-sur-Mer site (France), which produces 4.6 million tonnes of steel each year.
The modernisation of the boilers, the rotating machines and the auxiliaries - which will be carried out over a 3-year period - will improve the energy conversion of the steel-making gases produced by the process into vapour, electricity and compressed air, to supply the blast furnaces and the production cycle. This will enable ArcelorMittal Méditerranée to modernise the site's production and competitiveness, thanks to better environmental performance and a reduction in its CO2 emissions.
The plant's 105 operating technicians will be joining up with Veolia Industries Global Solutions staff to implement the project.
'It is a key project for the future of the site. Our objective is to have an electricity production capacity of 700 GWh per year, which half of the plant's total consumption, or the equivalent of a city of 100 000 inhabitants', stated François Sgro, ArcelorMittal Méditerranée's industrial director.
'To enable us to meet the challenges that face ArcelorMittal Méditerranée, we have proposed an economic model which includes new installation reliability levers, contributing to higher production capacity availability. Under this partnership, we are delighted to welcome the teams whose expertise is at the very heart of Veolia's know-how', added Pierre Rellet, the CEO of Veolia Industries Global Solutions.
