We are pleased to announce that Jonathan Ellis will be joining Sports as a deputy editor focused on digital and visual storytelling.

Jonathan comes to us from the Politics desk, where he worked closely with the Graphics and Design teams as well as reporters and editors on results pages, a new format for live reporter analysis on election nights, live chats, candidate pages, the Battleground Dispatches series, a special section on voting, the Electoral College tracker and more.

Somewhere in there, he found time to help edit 'In Harm's Way,' a project documenting the stories of frontline workers in the pandemic.

Before that, as an editor on the Climate desk, he helped conceive, run and edit ambitious reports, visual stories and projects, and oversaw the start and growth of the Climate Fwd: newsletter.

He has worn several hats at The Times, from leading the Snapchat Discover team and lending a hand in Washington during the Trump transition, to working as the newsroom's mobile leader several years ago, to coordinating all our digital coverage, election guides and live events during the 2008 campaign. He also worked as managing editor of Mashable for two years, overseeing a newsroom with more than 100 journalists and seven bureaus worldwide.

He says he is most looking forward to 'competitions where it doesn't take several days to determine a winner' (so, no baseball for Jonathan).

He starts next week.
