Industry data released Wednesday said German-owned discounters Aldi and Lidl performed strongly.

As well as traditional heavyweights Sainsbury's and Tesco.

The researcher Kantar said Sainsbury's sales were up 9.3% year on year over the 12 weeks to December 24.

That pushed up its market share to its highest since December 2020.

Tesco's sales rose 7.5%, and its market share edged up to 27.6%.

Kantar recorded Lidl's sales growth at 13.8% and Aldi's at just under a tenth.

On Tuesday both discounters reported sales growth for December.

Kantar said a record $17.3 billion passed through supermarket tills in the UK over the four weeks to Dec. 24.

The researcher said the average household spent an all-time high of around $600 in the period.
