Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries : Milestone Achieved as First Shipment of Automated Cranes Dispatched to Chancay Port, Peru

On April 30th, the initial shipment of five double-cantilever automated rail cranes for the first phase of COSCO Shipping Ports' Chancay Port in Peru was dispatched from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries' branch in Nangtong, China. This marks a significant advance in the construction of South America's most intelligent port into its final phase.

COSCO Shipping Ports' Chancay Port is a large-scale integrated greenfield port project. For the first phase, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries is supplying an array of equipment tailored to meet specific user requirements, including six remote-controlled quay bridges, fifteen double-cantilever automated rail cranes, three bulk gantry cranes, and three multi-purpose gantry cranes. The project officially commenced in early August 2023 and is progressing on an accelerated timeline.

The rail crane designed for the project boasts a rated lifting capacity of 41 tons, a span of 31 meters, and a lifting height of 18.5 meters. It is equipped with advanced management technology, video surveillance, intelligent identification and situation monitoring. These features provide a robust foundation for the terminal's automated and intelligent operations. Once operational, the equipment will significantly enhance the terminal's operational efficiency.

Peru holds the distinction of being the first Latin American country to maintain both a comprehensive strategic partnership and a set of bilateral free trade agreements. Chancay Port, a key emerging port on Peru's Pacific coast, possesses a natural deep-water harbor. The first phase of the project includes the construction of two container berths, one general berth, one multi-purpose berth, and support facilities. The combined length of the berths reaches 1,500 meters. Upon completion, the port will be capable of accommodating container ships of up to 200,000-ton capacity.

The first phase of COSCO Shipping Ports' Chancay Port in Peru is designed with a focus on both economic and environmental benefits. It represents the first major transport infrastructure project undertaken by China in Peru and stands as a landmark project within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. Once operational, the port is poised to become a significant transport hub and logistics center along the Pacific coast of South America, contributing to the rapid expansion of the region's international trade.
