As a result of the future options contract, the Swedish Air Force will be able to take any directions depending on the future needs with the Gripen C/D fighters. This in turn will add more operational years and enhance the availability of Gripen C/D which is currently SwAF's backbone.

The Swedish Ministry announced in October last year that SwAF plans to retain Gripen C/D fighters beyond 2026. The plan comes under Sweden's recent decision to up the defence budget by 40%. As per a Janes report, four out of the six Gripen C/D squadrons will transition to Gripen E in future. The remaining two will be updated to meet the requirements of the Swedish Air Force over the next decade.
Work under the SEK185m contract will commence starting this December and will be carried out for a year.
Gripen C/D is currently operational in countries like Czech Republic, South Africa, Thailand and Hungary.
