Canadian company improves throughput, acquires new customers

Greenwich, CT - December 3, 2012 - Presstek, Inc., a leading supplier of digital offset printing solutions to the printing and communications industries, today announced that PP Print & Digital Services of Port Perry, Ontario, Canada, has installed a Presstek 34DI digital offset press. The company has eight employees and annual revenues in excess of CAD$1 million. PP Print & Digital Services, the longest-standing local printer, was founded 38 years ago by Henry Janssen. For the past 23 years, his son, Tony Janssen, has owned and operated the company.

"We had an old Heidelberg 19x25" four-color press that needed to be rebuilt," said Janssen. "That's what started us looking for a new solution. We needed a press that could cost-effectively address the larger number of smaller runs that were coming in the door. We also wanted to use this acquisition to reduce our environmental footprint."

Janssen chose to acquire a Certified Pre-Owned Presstek 34DI digital offset press to replace the older Heidelberg press. The shop also operates two 11x17" 2-color presses, a Xerox and two Konica digital toner-based printers, and a Roland 540B 4-color conventional offset press, along with a variety of finishing equipment that allows the firm to complete most of its work under one roof.

"The results we have achieved with our Presstek 34DI press have been amazing," Janssen adds. "With our previous process, setup time was astronomical, taking about an hour to makeready on a job and allowing us to get 4 to 5 small jobs out per day. With the Presstek 34DI, setup time is 10 minutes, and we can get those 4-5 jobs out in 2 to 2.5 hours. It's quite a time and cost savings, and we have been able to pass along some of those cost savings to our customers, making us much more competitive in the marketplace."

Janssen points out that he has lowered his operating cost, adding that there is no need for a separate platesetter, developer or chemistry. "Now about 35% of our work runs through the Presstek DI and our short run work has increased by 10%. Customers are delighted with the quality and turnaround time we can now deliver."

The Presstek 34DI is a highly automated four-color digital offset press. The 34DI features support for 300 lpi and FM screening, 10-minute job-to-job turnover (including on-press plate imaging), and a small environmental footprint. The press prints up to 7,000 sheets per hour. Certified Pre-Owned DI presses from Presstek have been reconditioned by a skilled team of Presstek DI experts, include a new press warranty and are eligible for a Presstek Service Maintenance Agreement.

"PP Print & Digital Services had already made great progress transitioning its business to meet the needs of today's market realities," said Joe Demharter, Presstek's Vice President of Sales. "The company is producing everything from short-run digital printing to large format sign making. Now, with its Presstek 34DI, PP Print has been able to improve throughput and quality, reduce costs and acquire new customers. The Presstek 34DI is the ideal solution for this growing, successful company."
