NEW SUPPLY ROUTES SAVING CARBON EMISSIONS IN LATIN AMERICA
This sustainability story is one of many that shows how Olin products, technologies, ideas, and people are having a positive impact on our world.
SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE
OLIN'S SOLUTION
On the west-coast of South America, Olin Epoxy customers were supplied exclusively with containerships coming from the USA through Panama Canal, shipping on a sea route of 7,725 Kilometers (Km).
Shipping congestion and uncertainty about global container supply increased the total transit time and logistics costs, also reducing competitiveness against other suppliers.
Form No. 600-05084-0922
Olin teams established a direct and reliable intermodal connection by short-sea shipping between the Olin Guaruja Plant, Brazil, and main destinations along the west coast of South America including Chile, Peru, and Ecuador.
Olin also selected short-sea shipping companies in Brazil which are testing a new marine vessel (named B7) with ~7% biodiesel which reduces the total carbon footprint up to 0,196 Kg CO2 per liter.
POSITIVE IMPACT
This 6,510 Km strategic sea route through the Strait of Magellan avoids 4,050 Kg of CO2 annually and reduces transit time by 21 days.
Additionally, each container shipped through this new supply route operating with biodiesel B7 also contributes an extra reduction of 43,5 Kg CO2 emissions, leading to an annual saving of more than 1.3 MT of CO2.
