Argentina, August 18, 2014 - The Municipality of Tigre in Argentina has announced that it is using NEC Corporation's (NEC; TSE: 6701) NeoFace Watch face recognition software, combining the high speed, high accuracy face recognition algorithms from NEC with a scalable, high performance, next-generation face matching software application. NeoFace Watch uses the latest technologies to analyze large numbers of faces extracted in real-time from images captured by HD cameras then compares these with photo databases of sought-after individuals.

NEC's NeoFace Watch is being used with the network cameras monitoring urban terminals deployed in short, medium and long distance railway and river stations. The system will be available for prosecutors, other judicial bodies and public welfare organizations in order to locate missing persons.

"As the city experiences exciting developments in the years ahead, it is important that we provide the security and safety that residents and visitors demand and expect. Technology is no longer deemed a luxury - it is in fact, an essential in providing this security and safety. We have been able to take advantage of the latest innovations in urban surveillance, such as behavior detection, by integrating the latest technologies. This has raised the capabilities of our security and emergency agencies, while building a stronger bond with residents," said Sergio Massa, national deputy and former local mayor of Tigre.

In 2013, a memorandum of understanding was signed between NEC Argentina and the Municipality of Tigre for the evaluation and testing of a wide portfolio of "Safer Cities" technologies offered by the company. Since then, NEC has developed and deployed a wide variety of technologies for public safety, such as License Plate Recognition software, used with video surveillance cameras within the city for positive identification of cars and motorcycles, as well as Suspicious Behavior Recognition software that has the ability to detect large groups of people, loitering and suspicious movements by vehicles or pedestrians.

"We are very happy supporting Tigre City in the implementation of technologies that contribute to improving the safety of their citizens. NEC aims to continue working with our customers to contribute to improved availability of information for decision making. The constant willingness and proactivity of Tigre City in the search of technological solutions to improve the quality of life of its citizens, allows us to move forward in making safer cities," said Jorge Vargas, head of the NEC Latin America Regional Competence Center.

Looking forward, NEC aims to continue supporting the improvement of public safety through new and innovative technologies and partnerships that reach communities worldwide.
