NASA selected Lockheed Martin to develop and build the next-generation weather satellite constellation for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The Geostationary Extended Observations baseline contract is for three spacecraft with options for four additional spacecraft, Lockheed Martin said Tuesday. The estimated value of the contract including options is $2.27 billion.

GeoXO's new capabilities will deliver more accurate weather forecasting, the company said, and address emerging environmental issues.

The GeoXO satellite system is NOAA's planned replacement for the existing Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite system.
