JCDecaux has announced 'very good performances' for its self-service bicycle hire (SSB) systems worldwide in 2022, with total rentals up 21% on 2021.

In France, rentals are up 14% on last year, says the urban advertising specialist.

More than 755 million journeys have been made with self-service bicycles operated by JCDecaux since their first deployment in Vienna (Austria) in 2003.

While some French cities have just returned to levels equivalent to or higher than the pre-Covid period (notably Toulouse with +2% rentals in 2022 vs. 2019 and +14% vs. 2021), other VLS systems recorded particularly exceptional performances in 2022.

JCDecaux points out in particular that after the previous record in 2021, Vélo'v (Lyon's VLS service) recorded over 10.5 million rentals during 2022, up 16%. This is a new all-time record since the service was rolled out in 2005
