Ashikaga City in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, Ashikaga Gas Co., Ltd. (Ashikaga Gas) and INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX) jointly announced today they entered into separate agreements on the carbon neutralization of natural gas as part of the objective, "To turn Ashikaga City into a zero carbon city" prescribed under the previously concluded Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement. Through these agreements, Ashikaga Gas will purchase carbon neutral gas from INPEX and replace the natural gas it supplies to Ashikaga City for use in the main government building of Ashikaga City with carbon neutral gas. In addition, Ashikaga Gas will convert the natural gas utilized by its offices in Ashikaga City to carbon neutral gas.

Under the "Ashikaga Zero Carbon City Declaration" announced in February 2024, Ashikaga City has actively worked together with the public and private sectors to achieve a carbon neutral society. Starting with this introduction of carbon neutral gas, Ashikaga City will further deepen its efforts related to this declaration to ensure the preservation of its abundant natural environment and cultural heritage for future generations.

Ashikaga Gas, as a comprehensive energy company supplying city gas, propane gas and electricity, has been committed to achieving a carbon neutral society by 2050 through actively promoting energy-saving measures, promoting locally produced and consumed energy, and striving for decarbonization. Ashikaga Gas will continue to work towards further promoting the adoption of carbon neutral gas, as well as supporting the environmental activities of citizens and expanding the carbon neutral initiatives through joint environmental awareness projects with Ashikaga City.

INPEX will provide a stable supply of diverse and clean energy through making its oil and natural gas business cleaner as outlined in its "Long-term Strategy and Medium-Term Management Plan (INPEX Vision @2022 | INPEX CORPORATION)" formulated in February 2022. In this plan, INPEX lays out its long-term strategy towards 2030 and 2050 as well as the company's medium-term business plan, which consists of specific goals and initiatives covering the three-year period from 2022 until 2024, reflecting changes in INPEX's management environment.

INPEX will work closely with city gas business operators to which it supplies wholesale natural gas and implement measures contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases on a global scale alongside its customers by responding to their needs through providing a stable supply of natural gas as well as solutions such as carbon neutral gas and other forms of clean energy.

About carbon neutral gas

The neutrality of the natural gas is based on carbon credits certified by a credible certifier as deriving from CO2 reduction efforts at global forest conservation projects, etc. based around the world. Greenhouse gas emissions have been offset throughout the entire value chain process from development to combustion.
