Kaeng Krachan elephant enclosure at Zurich Zoo wins the 2015 Ulrich Finsterwalder Structural Engineering Award - Success for Implenia's Wooden Construction department | Construction pits built by Implenia for the expansion of the Iffezheim Rhine power station (D) also recognised

Dietlikon, 30 January 2015 - The Ulrich Finsterwalder Structural Engineering Award is presented every two years by publishers Ernst & Sohn Verlag. This year the Kaeng Krachan elephant enclosure at Zurich Zoo has won the coveted prize. The project was chosen ahead of around 45 other contenders, which the jury evaluated against functional, technical, financial and design criteria. Implenia's Wooden Construction department played a significant role in constructing the enclosure as part of the Holzbau Elefantenpark consortium working for Zoo Zürich AG. "We were impressed by both the architectural design and the technical engineering that went into the new elephant enclosure," said the jury in its report. They also drew attention to the high level of craftsmanship required to build the structure. "The construction, innovation, interdisciplinary cooperation, aesthetics and sustainability criteria were all fulfilled to an impressive degree," said the jurors. "I'm very proud that in cooperation with everyone else involved were able to contribute to the creation of this unique structure," said Christian Kündig, Head of Wooden Construction at Implenia Switzerland. The jury also awarded a distinction to the construction pits at the Rhine power station in Iffezheim, Germany. The power station's operators invested EUR 100 Mio in an additional turbine, which was put into operation in June 2013 and now produces 122 million kWh of additional power every year. Implenia was heavily involved in the work as part of the RKW consortium.
