(Alliance News) - Eni Spa announced Thursday that Greenpeace and ReCommon have requested a stay of the climate lawsuit filed last year. The associations requested the suspension following the filing of a jurisdictional ruling.

"Jurisdiction that had already been ruled out in the well-known Giudizio Universale lawsuit, brought by the world of associations against the Italian state, again on climate issues," the company specified in a note.

"Eni expresses its perplexity about this initiative," the statement reads, "aimed at obtaining the suspension of the lawsuit actually initiated by the organizations themselves, for which the judge had instead already set the hearing for decision for September 14, 2024.

The company stresses "the risk that, precisely on the initiative of Greenpeace and ReCommon, a long period of suspension of the decision planned instead shortly will be opened." This circumstance "will allow the two associations to continue in their campaign of disinformation, pursuing media objectives that allow more slogans and less rigor in terms of study, analysis and evaluation, and whose verification by the court of that invested is thus procrastinated precisely at the initiative of those who had claimed to promote it," it further reads.

Eni's stock trades in the green by 1.6 percent at EUR14.11 per share.
