The Winbis wind farm project has reached another milestone: The first 5 of 22 wind turbines have shortly begun feeding electricity into the Italian grid. As of this summer, the wind farm will be running at full capacity and will supply around 22,000 households with environmentally friendly electricity.
The wind farm, with a capacity of 66 MW, is being built in
a high wind area in the Campania region of southwest Italy.
The wind farm is 100 percent owned by EGL, a subsidiary of
Axpo. The installation fits optimally into the more
strongly diversified production portfolio of the parent
company, Axpo, a leading Swiss energy corporation that,
among other things, foresees further strong expansion in
new renewable energies.
At full capacity, the wind farm will generate around 110
GWh of electricity, and thus save over 125,000 tons of CO2
in comparison to a conventional thermal power plant. Under
the EU's overall energy consumption target with a
20-percent share coming from renewable energies, Italy is
also committed to reducing CO2. By 2020, the country wants
to increase today's installed wind power capacity of around
7,000 MW to nearly 13,000 MW.
