Consumer companies fell overall on ongoing interest-rate worries, while strong earnings lifted individual names.

Online pet retailer Chewy said net sales rose 3.1% from a year earlier in its quarter ended April 28, better than the 1.9% increase Wall Street analysts were expecting. By contrast, brick-and-mortar peer Petco reported a 1.7% sales decline in its quarter ended May 4.

Dick's Sporting Goods shares rallied to a record high, after it posted better-than-expected quarterly profit and raised its 2024 outlook.

Abercrombie & Fitch stock jumped to an all-time high after it boosted its sales outlook and reported stronger-than-forecast results.
