The move comes following Carillion's appointment as delivery partner to the Birmingham Energy Savers scheme, which is set to make energy use greener and more affordable for 60,000 households across the city, as well as boosting the local job market.

Carillion has committed to create and sustain at least 360 jobs and to help 600 people from priority groups into placements, training and employment, working closely with the council and local community groups. For example, many of the new recruits came to Carillion via Employment Access Training (EAT), an organisation that helps unemployed people find training and work opportunities in the Birmingham area.

Having undergone pre-employment training with EAT before taking part in a recruitment assessment centre in December, the new recruits will embark on a two-week general training plan followed by on-the-job training specific to their roles.

In addition, preparations are being made for a new Green Deal qualification, to be available later in the year. All of the new recruits are members of the local community and come from a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, reflecting the varied heritage of the BES customer base.

Chris Hall, Carillion's Account Director for Birmingham Energy Savers, commented: "The Green Deal offers a wealth of training and employment opportunities throughout the community and we are dedicated to providing as much help and support as we can to local people, to ensure that these economic benefits remain within the local area.

"...the recruitment of the first Green Deal assessors marks an important step in the delivery of the Birmingham Energy Savers scheme..."

"What's more, the recruitment of the first Green Deal assessors marks an important step in the delivery of the Birmingham Energy Savers scheme and we're looking forward to starting the assessment process with the first properties soon."

The Green Deal assessment is a key part of obtaining funding under the scheme and the new assessors will be responsible for surveying properties and making recommendations for the appropriate energy efficiency measures.

Bile Telesphore, one of the new Green Deal assessors employed by Carillion, commented: "I'm really excited to be part of this new scheme, which offers a huge opportunity for my local community.  I've already started talking to people about the project and there seems to be a real change in the atmosphere - people are really embracing the scheme and as they begin to understand how it can help them lower their energy bills."
